Artist Statement
This photograph is one of my favorites from an ongoing series I call Self-Adjustment. I am both photographer and model in the images, which are less “self-portraits” than expressions of a theme that has been greatly important to me throughout my life: how our sexuality defines us in the eyes of others, and how those definitions shape our visions of ourselves.
I use myself as the model for these images because I feel I can best illustrate my ideas through my own expression. The images are a sort of diary, not necessarily based literally on my own life stories, but always based on my feelings, questions and observations. I intentionally make the images suggestive but not overt; I do not wish to present an erotic escape. Rather, my objective is to create sensual, intimate images that are provocative in their simultaneous vulnerability & power, so that I may delve into the psyche of the viewer, invite thought and evoke response.
