Artist Statement
The camera is a tool that enables me to explore, translate and articulate my personal aesthetic. Grotto is part of a new body of work based on recent travels within Europe. The piece utilizes multiple photographs taken in and around Florence, Italy. As a montage, it distorts objective (physical) reality. It reveals, however, my subjective response to the lush history and mystery of the Tuscan landscape.
Grotto is composed of approximately 10 digital photographs, overlapped via 32 separate layers. The photos were shot in raw format using a 12.8 megapixel digital SLR (Canon 5D) and imported into Photoshop CS3 for compositing.
