Artist Statement
The Golden Gate Bridge is an icon of the West -- has not every visitor to San Francisco with a camera photographed it? Yet, immediately after 9/11, the act of taking its picture was suspect, and still today some wonder if a detailed photo, in the wrong hands, could compromise its security.
In this image, elements of the fence - the vertical posts, the thin cable of barbed wire, and the diagonals of chain links - echo similar elements of the bridge, just as the fence as a whole echo some of the changes in the U.S. post 9/11.
Gelatin silver print, selenium toned. Photographed with a medium format camera on black & white film, printed in a darkroom using traditional techniques.
