Artist Statement
Lunch Spot was taken at White Sands National Monument in January 2009. Ron Zimmerman and I had been shooting the dunes since before sunrise and had stopped to take a break at one of the rest areas. The sun was moving rapidly higher, making the sands more snow-like and exceptionally bright, which was not what we had planned for the medium format shots. Literally as an afterthought, I unpacked my Nikon and "grabbed" this shot. The D200 was converted to black infrared last year, which provides the coloration and contrast. Tonal and sharpening adjustments were made in CS4, with overall manipulation being kept to a minimum.
