Artist Statement
The Camera is a tool that enables me to explore, translate and articulate my personal aesthetic. Sanctum is part of a new body of work based on recent travels within Europe. The piece utilizes multiple photographs taken in and around Florence, Italy. The interior space was shot at the Basilica of Santa Maris del Fiore, aka "il Duomo". The near landscape, which overlays the Duomo's massive stone wall, shows a view of the south bank of the Arno River as seen from Ponte alls Grazie. (The pigeons themselves are Venetian.)
Sanctum is composed of approximately 7 digital photographs, portions of which were overlapped via 27 separate layers. The photos were shot in raw format using a 12.8 megapixel digital SLR, and imported into Photoshop CS3 for compositing.
