I have seen this scene before but only from great distances. A powerful image with its daunting beauty and deep contrast.

I live in the Eastern Sierra area of California, one of the most beautiful places anywhere. The most amazing weather and light phenomena occur here, and I quickly learned NEVER to leave the house without my camera. I have spent a lot of time looking for the perfect scene or waiting for the right light. But there are many shots I get just because I’m in the right place at the right time and always have my camera. It was a summer day in 2005, I was driving home from work down the grade toward the valley below. I was in full sunshine. A thunderstorm had formed between me and the Sierra, completely backlighting the rain from behind Mt. Tom. The wind then kicked in its contribution to bring the rain to life. The Owens Valley has long been inhabited by the Paiute Indians, and this scene gave me a very spiritual feeling, like I was watching Indian spirits dancing in the rain.
