Susana van Bezooijen

Susana van Bezooijen was born in Berkeley, CA and grew up on the Peninsula, surrounded by nature. She studied Speech and Drama at Stanford University and has worked as a teacher, actress, and dancer. She has had students from many different cultures, whose faces and stories frequently appear in her work. She lived in a small Yucatan village in 1973, where her love of magic, spirit and ritual was discovered.

Susana began making ceramic sculpture when she took a doll making class, and sculpted the tiny hands, head and feet of her first doll. When she moved to Half Moon Bay in 1990, she took classes in ceramics and began to create sculpture. The images that sustain her art come from the deep watery place where we go in myth, memory and dreams.
Living and working near the sea brings her closer to that neptunian world. In her words, "My artwork is the greatest gift the ocean gave me"
